Realized and potential distribution of broadleaved trees at their northern range limits: towards climate change adaptation

Postdoc - Jacqueline Souza Lima

As a consequence of climate warming, plants and animals are expected to shift their geographical ranges poleward and upward. The goal of this project is to study these range dynamics for seven broadleaved trees having their northern range limit occurring across central Sweden.

Using the species distribution models with transplant experiment we want to answer some questions like:

1) Have the different tree species already started to expand their latitudinal distribution northward compared to 20-30 years ago?

2) What is the current gap between the realized and potential distribution of each life stage?

3) What are the predictions for 50 and 100 years from now for the potential distributions?

4) In which areas and microhabitats could a forest manager introduce these species already now?
